Douglass CLT’s 2023 Annual Membership Meeting & Board Election! You – the members- will get to celebrate, elect representatives to the Board of Directors, and mingle over Zoom. Members can get involved by nominating themselves or someone else to run for a seat on the Board by Dec. 5 to get on the ballot. For assistance contact Ginger at ginger [at] douglassclt [dot] org.

Luwam Kebade

Luwam Kebade is originally from Eritrea, East Africa, and is proud to have called Washington, DC, home for the past 14 years. Luwam is a licensed Early Childhood Development professional who works at a public charter school in DC with families and children. She first was enrolled in the school’s Two-Generation Program when her daughter was a baby and she was learning English. She progressed onto being a volunteer while enrolled in the Child Development Associate program and was then hired as a professional. Luwam values continual education and loves spending time with her daughter doing ballet, swimming, cooking, and having fun with her “best friend.”

STATEMENT OF INTEREST: I have lived at the T Street Cooperative since 2010 and I understand how valuable having Douglass CLT provide assistance to the co-op is. Douglass CLT is like a cooperative project itself, with diverse people working together, and it’s a place where I can continue learning and contributing.

Michelle Mitchell  

Michelle Mitchell has been living in the community for over 20 years and has been part of developing her own outreach for different residents. Mrs. Mitchell participates in the food bank at her church, which also has a community garden project in which she is involved. She helps to prepare breakfast on Sundays for those who come to church or are hungry.  She is a strong advocate for the fair treatment of all people not just the residents of our community.

STATEMENT OF INTEREST: I am honored to serve as a board member with Douglass CLT with my time talents and treasures and hope to continue. I’m knowledgeable and resourceful in identifying resources as well as successfully resolving issues that require the involvement of governmental authorities. While following up to ensure a timely resolution. I have a special love for people which allows me to feed, clothe, and develop a personal relationship with them.  Thank you!

Julian “Jay” Forth

Julian “Jay” Forth has worked alongside DC residents for a more just city since 2010. He’s served as a Tenant Organizer, an Executive Director for a community center, a Director of Homeless Street Outreach, a Board Member various mission-driven organizations, and a member of Luther Place Memorial Church. My commitment to economic and racial justice motivates directs my professional and volunteer work.

STATEMENT OF INTEREST: I’m interested in serving on the Board of Douglass Community Land Trust because I resonate with its mission to foster community-based wealth. By prioritizing collective ownership and lasting affordability, Douglass CLT can offer resistance to the current of gentrification that is rapidly displacing low-income residents of color. My goal is to use my skills and experience to help Douglass CLT realize its mission while remaining accountable to its stakeholders, financially stable, and loyal to its values.

DeJuan Mason

DeJuan Mason is the Community Engagement Coordinator at the Coalition for Racial Equity and Democratic Economy (CREDE). A proud graduate of Mount Vernon College, I was inspired to pursue a career in the non-profit arena while working as a chapter relations manager for the American Nurses Association. Prior to working at CREDE, I was the manager of Curbside Groceries at the Capital Area Food Bank where I was responsible for launching a mobile grocery truck in Ward 8 and Prince George’s County.  Additionally, I have worked in the workforce development arena for community-based organizations and facilitating life skills training for youth detained through DYRS.    In my free time I can be found enjoying outdoor festivals, drafting plays, poems and short stories, or singing in the Charm City Labor Chorus.

STATEMENT OF INTEREST: Thank you for the opportunity to be nominated to serve on the Douglass Community Land Trust Board.  I am drawn to this work because it aligns with my love for community – specifically my community.  I would love an opportunity to serve my hometown in a way that builds up my neighbors through education and engagement while at the same time ensuring that their voices are centered in any work or development that affects their lives, their futures and those of their children and their children’s children.

Jade Tinsley

Jade Tinsley is the Program Director of the East of the River Affordable Housing Preservation Department and the Cooperative and Condominium Technical Assistance Program at Housing Counseling Services, Inc. Growing up in the District of Columbia and witnessing the affordable housing crisis first-hand sparked the desire to advocate for DC residents. In her role at Housing Counseling Services Jade is dedicated to ensuring that DC residents are fully educated about their rights and the programs available to them, while providing the ongoing technical assistance necessary to obtain housing stability. Jade has been a member of the Douglass Community Land Trust since 2018 as a member of the Advisory Committee. Jade then held multiple positions on the Board until stepping down at the end of 2022 to focus on family.

STATEMENT OF INTEREST: I am looking forward to resuming my role as an active member of the Douglass Community Land Trust in the upcoming year, during the last year I have maintained a connection with Douglass CLT working collaboratively as a partner on various affordable housing initiatives. I would love the opportunity to expand my involvement and offer my time and experience as a member of the Board of Directors.
